The 'Can's and 'Cannot's of Attending Concerts...

For all you people out there, if you knew there were do's and don'ts of fashion, the same thing applies to attending concerts (and other performances as well!) Since some of you may be attending a concert for the rare few times in your lives, here's some things that you should take note of:

1. DO be seated before the concert begins. Just like attending band practices, the times stated are the times when the performance will start, and not for you to arrive. Always give yourself buffer time, in case there are huge crowds and there is a jam at the entrances. Certain places (like Esplanade) are VERY strict about starting concerts on time, and you may find yourself standing outside and trying to listen to the concert from a very small TV. Although some performances may allow 2nd entries (or during the break), special performances (like Beautiful Sunday) may not allow entrance once the performance has started, since it's only about 1 hour.

2. DO dress appropriately. Slippers are not allowed (and the people there reject your entry) and shorts/ bermudas and singlets are generally not encouraged for indoor performances. Other than the practical reason of the hall being air conditioned (and turning into an ice cube is NOT a fun thing to do), it's a gesture of respect to the performers. For performances that are more 'relaxed' (like those that are held in the afternoon) or has a 'teen' theme to it, jeans and casual tops are fine. More 'formal' performances (usually at night), will require some form of dress, similar to you going for your cousin's wedding dinner (minus the puffy pink dresses with huge ribbons!)

3. DO bring mints (or other form of sweets) in your bag. This is NOT to keep you occupied (this is not movie hor!!!), you might find yourself coughing or having a sore throat, and the mint would help ease your throat and prevent loud coughs. IF the composer had wanted coughing sounds to go with his music, trust me, he would have written it in! DON'T bring lollipops! General eating and drinking (even plain water!) are not allowed inside the performance halls.

4. DO clap to show your appreciation for the performers and their music (louder if you like it even more than the average performance) but DON'T shout the names of people whom you might know on stage. That is reserved for rock and pop concerts. If you would like to show appreciation for the performers, a simple SMS of encouragement (or thanks) should be enough. If your best friend is performing, how about buying a stalk of rose?

5. DON'T talk when something is happening on stage (unless it's just people shifting chairs). The pet peeve of many performers is to hear the audience talking amongst themselves in the middle of a performance. Let's put it this way - would you enjoy it if someone kept talking loudly during your performance, especially during the soft parts?

6. DO switch your phone off, or set it vibration mode. Again, if the composer wanted ring tones or SMS tones in his music, he WOULD have written it (did you guys know there IS a piece based on Nokia ring tones? If I remember correctly, it actually involves musicians having their phones going off during the performance!)

7. DON'T shout for your friend (if you see him) across the hall. Whilst I'm sure your friend has no wish for the rest of the audience to hear his name, it's generally disruptive to any other people who are there for the performance and not to get to know your friend.

8. DON'T take any photos or video recordings on your phone. Copyright issues are involved!

9. DON'T move away from your chair unless it is REALLY necessary (and please ar, DON'T kick or lean your knee onto the chair in front of you!!!) A good time to go to the toilet (in urgent cases), would be IN BETWEEN pieces, and not during the music itself! (Again, we don't want to disturb other people!). Just be careful though, they might not let you back in again! Here's a hint, go to the toilet before entering the hall.

It's OK to stop/ tell someone to keep quiet (etc) in the hall, just do it nicely and DON'T start a fistfight.

They are starting!!! ;p

Many things will happen during November practices. Fundamentals will be tested on and revised. Those who did not finish the test will complete them, many new pieces will be learnt.

It's going to be difficult few practices (many many things to do in a limited period of time) and the Sec 3s will not be around for many of the practices (they have lessons). Sec 2s and Sec 1s, we will have many interesting days ahead! :D

Year End Exams...

How are preparations coming along? Anybody miss me yet? ;p Hope everyone is seriously mugging at home and revising all their work before their exams. Hope to see some really good results (especially from the seniors!) and to have even better playing when we come back for the November practices!

Some things that can help you guys to relax:
1. Share jokes on the band blog
2. Remove your programs for games from your computer (Maple, Audition ;p)
3. Limit your internet time to 30 minutes every 3 days
4. Practice your instrument for 15 minutes a day (scales, long notes) --> REMEMBER. Use your tuner to help guide you!
5. Revise your rhythms (we'll be working a lot more on those when you get back)
6. MEMORIZE all the music definitions/ playing terms. A lot more to go through and verbal testing
These should be entertaining enough! Take a good look at YOU CAN'T STOP THE BEAT. Especially the rhythms!

For those who haven't taken their scale test, we will resume during the November holidays, but will pick you guys by random instead of checking individually.

Please do not rely on your SLs to practice/ remind about things. Learn to be independent and be PROACTIVE about everything. One does NOT need to be a 'leader' in name to play an important part in helping to push the band to better standards. Learning music is not an easy task, and it'll take all of us to play a part in moving things along.

I also want to thank you guys for trying to arrange your holiday schedule in order to accommodate the band (especially the foreign students!).

How do you guys feel after our very first formation? (:

I hope everyone had fun and learnt many things during the entire process (how not to let your shaking legs show ;p) and will remember these lessons. Some of the things that we have taught may not seem relevant, but can be applied to daily things that you do in life as well as normal band practices.

Next few weeks are going to be tough for us (I suspect it's going to be that way more for me than you guys ;p) and I hope everyone will take the initiative to do what is needed to be done. The weather is bad (hate the haze) and some of you are falling ill. Please take good care of yourselves. Less of sinful food and more of the 'good' stuff like vegetables, fish, water, fruits.

Have a good National Day break, recharge your batteries, and come back for the next round!

OK. Now we've received official news when CCA is starting (yippee!!!), here's a few facts and figures for you guys to chew on.

Number of Rehearsal Days to National Day Performance - 5
Number of songs to rehearse - 1 (National Anthem, never practiced before)

Number of Rehearsal Days to CLAP@Toa Payoh - 8
Number of songs to rehearse - 6 (5 never practiced before)

Need I stress that the schedule is TIGHTTTTT!?!?!?!?

Here's how we CAN complete the performances. Provided everybody does it.

EveryONE needs to practice their pieces and learn their notes AT HOME. You still have a week.

SECTION LEADERS - YOU need to start looking and checking on your section, especially the juniors.

How have you guys been? It kinda feels like the holiday break again (at least, for me la!) whilst I wait EAGERLY for band practice to start again (: In the meantime, I hope all of you are following the guidelines and remember WHY band practices have to be canceled. Please make all these precautions worth it. PLEASE also complete your school work and start early revision of your subjects, especially the Sec 3s. Not having your holiday homework collected doesn't mean you don't need to do it :S

To help keep your mind on music (just in case you guys didn't bring home your instruments/ mouthpieces to practice... I hope NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT....), here are some 'assignments' for each of you. Please help to spread the word to members who don't check the blog regularly enough.

This is how it works - I will assign a few questions every few days, to which you guys need to go and find the answers. There are many options available for you to get the answers, but I hope you guys are NOT going to tell your Mom:'Give me back the computer cable Mom, my band instructor needs me to surf the internet!' *lol*

Here are your questions for today. It's real easy, just give me the definitions for the following Italian musical terms:

i) Allegro
ii)Andante
iii) Largo
iv) Presto
v) The terms from (i) - (iv) are used to describe ___________ of the piece.

Answers should be written on a piece of paper and submitted at the first band practice. There will be penalty issued for the tally of wrong answers submitted. e.g. 5 wrong answers - keep all the music stands for 1 practice.

hmmm... from what i hear from some of your, the band camp seems quite fun and enjoying to you all!

during the formation, everybody works well and it seems quite nice, bu i think there some more rooms of improvement for it. there are somethings that i want to highlight to you : 1, i think that all of your need to make your steps bigger, so that the audience can see it clearly. 2, try your best to play with more staccato and play all the note shorter,because this is a fast pop piece song.

for amazing grace and other concert pieces(totoro, poem for band....etc.), please try and go read the pieces,mark down all the sharps and flats onto the pieces. please go and practice amazing grace first, as ms lim will be going through on the next band practice. so i want you all to focus on amazing grace first. SLs and the seniors who are attached to the sec 1, please make sure that the sec 1 can at least play some parts.

Sec 1, try your best to practice to play the pieces, ignore the quaver and the semi-quaver first,focus on crotchet and holding note first.

hope that you all can remember all the things that we practice and learn in the band camp, it include the formation, the concert pieces(amazing grace,totoro....etc.),warm up and all the spirit in the band!

Hey all,

I hope you guys had fun today and can remember what was taught. We did quite a bit of things today from the basketball court to the band room, and there is definitely more to come.

The band camp will start in 1.5 days, and I think some of your parents may be understandably concerned about your health/ hygiene during the band camp. To reassure you guys (even your parents, show them this blog if it helps ;p), these are the measures that we will take during the camp:

1. Temperature taking once a day. Anyone showing signs of fever will be sent home immediately.
2. Liquid hand soap will be made available from the band. We will be placing hand soap in the various toilets nearest to the band room and we will also enforce frequent hand washing (before/ after meals, before/ after band practices, before/ after drills).
3. All band members are STRONGLY encourage to take their shower twice a day.
4. All water being emptied from instruments (especially the brasses) will be poured into plastic cups which will be sanitized twice a day.

As it's the common flu season as well, here are some ways to keep yourself healthy:
1. Bring a jacket to put on if you are cold in air conditioned rooms
2. Bring track pants/ long socks to keep yourself warm at night
3. Drink lots of water.
4. Finish the fruits that are assigned to each of you for every meal (except breakfast).

Don't forget to leave the band t shirt to be worn on Thursday. Bring enough clothes!

How did you guys feel after today's practice? Things were moving s l o w l y today, and I think many of the Sec 1s are feeling 'shy' about playing together with the seniors. Please remember, we don't expect you to be able to play EVERYTHING perfectly, but you need (and MUST!) try try TRY to play at LEAST some of the notes! Being able to play music (and learn them fast) takes time and practice, and you will get better as time goes by.

The pieces that the Sec1s will need to concentrate on are as indicated on the board. Please feel free to look for me or Mr Tan if you have any problems with any of the notes or understanding what is in your score. (:

Exams...

How are you guys doing these few days? Enjoying the time that is being spent with your books now? (:
(I hope in the midst of all these, that you are practicing your instruments/ mouthpieces!!!)

I know that sometimes your computer/ TV/ book/ games will provide more incentive for you to share with them, but I hope you guys can apply the focus and concentration that you show at band practice and apply them to your studies. I really want to see BETTER results from all of you after your mid-year exams and I hope that the decision to stop so early for your exam preparations was not wrong.

Just a random thought here - Since we have the first 2 weeks of the June holidays as break from band practice, is anyone going to organize outings? ;p It's time the band had FUN!!!

In the meantime, we will start with Akiyama's studies and Amazing Grace at the first practice. The detailed schedule will be posted as soon as I get ALL my conductor scores *hintHINT*

I've received SMSes from you guys about the tuners. They are currently out of stock, I'll update you about the prices again when they are in Singapore.

In the meantime, you might want to consider:

1. persuading your graduating seniors to sell you their tuner sets at a 2ndhand price ;p
2. getting your Sec 1s to buy the tuners. Time to help them understand why it's SO important. It took some of you really LONG to understand why I was so particular about this (: If you can help with spreading the information to the Sec 1s, that would be great!

Dear Band,

I think it's been a very interesting road that we've journeyed on, and I hope that all of us can look back and learn the good and the bad. There were some days where practices were really terrible, and yet there were some where I would be really happy to be at rehearsals.

Award aside, do keep in mind that we have made progress over the past 2 years, and that we have allowance to make even more. Some things will change now (I'll explain more) and it's part and parcel of how we evolve as a band. Do not be disheartened, but take this all in our stride in our quest for improvement.

When we resume practices (I'll call it - The Next Lap), the expectations for the band are simple - get your notes and basic tuning done before you attend band practice. If anyone is interested in buying your own tuner still, let me know and I'll see if I can get some cheaper alternative. There are a lot of tuners in the band, but definitely not enough for one per person.

You should receive your new pieces by next Friday, please remember to commit 'You've Got The Beat' to memory. Please also take a good look at 'Amazing Grace' as we'll spend a bit of time working through that at the first few rehearsals.

What to expect the next few rehearsals - we move back to foundation training. For both the Sec 1s as well as to build up on whatever the seniors have. Please remember that your lungs and diaphragm are muscles that need to be exercised and conditioned, please do not stop practicing if you can.

In the meantime, there is still one more performance to go - Speech Day. Give it your best shot!

Hey guys...

I'm glad that all of you enjoyed the performance, and I hope you remember the sweat, blood and tears that you went through to prepare for this concert. Through it all, a lot of people stood steadfast by your side and always believed that you guys would be able to pull through. Please don't forget the efforts of all the teachers (Ms Neo, Ms Kong etc) who worked extra hard (and extra hours!) in order to ensure that you guys could concentrate on performing and not have to do any extra things like setting up the stage and front of house. Please don't forget the teachers in charge of us who were always persistently pushing you from the back and really putting in a LOT of extra hours so that you guys could practice.

We still have a long looooooooooooong way to go to improve ourselves, but we will all take tiny steps together to make this band into a better one. Not for the medals and the glory, but for the pure enjoyment of being able to make good music as a group, and making anyone who listens to us feel our enjoyment as well.

The road ahead of us is long and hard. But we'll walk this road together, one step at a time.

Sec 4s - we will miss you very much, and I hate to do this to you, but I am imposing a ban on ALL Sec 4s from the band room. You are NOT allowed to come in to play your instrument until you have completed your O levels. For 2mr band camp...
sec 1s does nt need to report for band... the rest pls report at 7.50
tmr we will b cleaning the band... including ur instrument, percussion instrument, store rm, band rm, and etc...
we will b doin tis to ensure tt the cleanliness in band is maintain as usual.. :P...
pls wear PE attire and bring thermometer for tmr band camp...

Mi, Clement, Li ting, Ivan, Kai xin and Linah went for the concert....
it was wonderful..
for those who had miss it....
i would b great if u had went...
u can prepare for the Festivo I,
we had a fun time....
i concert lasted 1hr 30 min...
we went to buy flowers for ms lim...
hahaha xD...
it was so nice.. it was accompanied by a cute bear...
sad case i din tak a photo of it...

the sound of the band was very loud....
even though their strength is 50+ band memberss...
so we had thought of an idea after band....

On monday...
all memebers are to repot to band at 8.15...(its nt compulsory though)
this hlp u in alot of way la...
Your SL should haf inform u le ba...
we would be havin some... Poo Poo muscle exercise...
the seniors shud knw it...
